Are Libraries Still Important?

In a world of constant connection and immediate information, a person might be forgiven for wondering if libraries are really still relevant. I mean who needs a library when you can Google anything you need to know, can get any book or eBook you want from Amazon, and can watch movies immediately from Netflix?

And yet, libraries across the country are reporting record numbers of people getting library cards, record numbers of books being checked out and record numbers of people needing a librarian’s help.
Even with increased use, libraries (especially public libraries) are taking budget cuts, shortening hours, laying off staff and cutting services.
